A Week in the life of a Photography Work Experience Student - 2026

After two years of hosting work experience students from local schools, this week I have been joined by Howie who reached out earlier in the year to ask if he could undertake his Year 10 work experience with me.

Over the last few days I have been able to give him a small insight into a few of the tasks that happen behind-the-scenes of a photography business. It has involved a variety of tasks from file handling to photo editing as well as social media scheduling and the never-ending task of keeping the website updated! And on our final day together, I’m excited to be able to give Howie a little bit of experience in actually taking some photos. In a plan hatched by myself and Cakes by Mrs F (who is hosting a student from the same school - my niece!) we’ve been able to arrange a photoshoot to capture their cake and biscuit creations from earlier in the week. This will give Howie some hands-on experience of working with clients face to face.

After such a busy week, I thought it would be a great idea to ask him to summarise his experience..

Howie - why did you choose to undertake your work experience in photography?

I chose to do Photography for my work experience because I was more experienced with that subject.

What was your favourite part of the week - did you find any tasks more enjoyable than others?

My favourite part of the week was taking the photos in the Hall and I found it more enjoyable than the Market research.

What skills do you think you have developed (or improved upon) during the week?

I have developed how to use new softwares without knowing how to use them and I have also improved how fast I am at editing photos and how to be more independent. I have also developed how to take photos on a camera.

What advice would you give to other students hoping to undertake work experience in photography?

The advice I would give to someone who wants to undertake photography for work experience is that we edit photos most of the time and we also might be able to take photos.

The photos included in this blog post were edited by Howie during his week of work experience at Copper and Blossom Photography
