Week 2 - Making Progress

Last week I started a new series of blog posts documenting my foray into full-time photography. If you would like to read the first post, please take a look here.

Having a bit more time to schedule my own workload means that I can spend a bit of time writing some extra blog posts without feeling too guilty for pressing pause on other aspects of work. Blog-writing seems to be one of the things that gets discarded during my busiest times even though its something that I really enjoy doing. My aim is to document the start of this journey into full-time photography. I'm bound to make mistakes along the way but there will also (I hope!) be lots of highlights too. As important as it is to learn from the mistakes, it's also important to document the achievements. I hope you'll join me for the ride!

I wrapped up my first blog post whilst staying overnight in Paignton. I don't normally sleep well in hotels (I find it a bit unsettling being in an unknown place) but after a hot shower, a large G&T and the gentle waves lapping outside my window, I found myself crawling into bed at 8.30pm and falling asleep immediately! I slept so well! Probably a combination of finally having a chance to relax and the weight of all of the stress that had built up over the last few months finally lifting from my shoulders (ok, the G&T probably helped too!).

Having such an early night meant that I was up in time to catch the sunrise so I spent a self-indulgent hour on the beach watching the advancing sun. It also meant that I was able to capture some photos of the pretty beach huts at the rear of the beach.

Having decided to give myself the day off (I had a 2.5 hour drive home after all and then needed to pick my nieces up from school) I had planned to drop into Stourhead on the way home, The weather had deteriorated slightly but luckily I had my wellies in the car. Throwing them on I spent a couple of hours trudging the paths of Stourhead with my camera in hand. I haven't visited in a fair few years so it was nice to be back - especially at this time of year.

The rest of the week has been spent catching up with editing photoshoots with varying degrees of success! I suppose in a way it's nice to be busy but I do feel rather bad for taking so long over the edits. I get far too attached to the images and really need to be stricter with myself and only edit the very best photos. It's going to take a bit of time but hopefully, with each edit, I will get a little better.

After having such a brilliant week last week catching up on admin, I have to admit that this week I have taken my foot off of the gas a little. Definitely something I need to rectify on Monday morning. On the plus side, I have again been in the office nice and early most days. I just think I need to be a little more pro-active with my time plans and set aside a decent amount of time for admin.

Initially my week was going to end with a newborn shoot out near Salisbury. I love being able to go back out and visit previous clients and meet their growing families. This time I got to meet baby "R" - at 8 days old he was still so tiny and cute! I was looking forward to a relatively relaxing weekend and attending a photowalk in Bradford-on-Avon on Sunday. However, after checking Facebook during Saturday evening I was lucky enough to notice a post advertising that a space had opened up at a local Wedding Fair. These spaces don't come up very often so I felt compelled to accept the space and go and display some of my photography. A late night organising an up to date slideshow was followed by an early morning packing the car of all of my bits and pieces. It was the first time that I had visited the Moonraker in Trowbridge and I have to say that it seems like a lovely venue. The Wedding Fair itself, however, was very quiet. I gave out a few leaflets and had fun chatting to some of the other suppliers but, to be honest, it was a long day which I don't really expect much back from. Fingers crossed I'm wrong!

Let's see what week 3 brings...
